Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route Tour

Itinerary – Lemosho Route

  • Duration: 8 Days
  • Trek Duration: 8 days

Trek overview:

  • Difficulty Level: Intermediate to high
  • Chance of successful summit ascent: high
  • Acclimatisation times: very good
  • Number of fellow trekkers on route: few
The Lemosho Route is a less heavily trekked route that crosses over a collapsed volcanic crater and is the preferred route for those who look forward to experiencing the trek to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro without encountering masses of fellow trekkers along the journey.

Trekking itinerary:

Day 1:
  • Meals provided: Lunch (L) – Dinner (D)

After 3 hours of driving from the hotel, we register with the Kilimanjaro National Park authorities at the Londorossi Gate (2,100 m above sea level). • Walking distance: approx. 8 km (approx. 700m elevation gain to 3,500m above sea level)

Day 3:

  • Walking distance:  approx. 11 km (approx. 700m elevation gain to 4,200m above sea level)

Today’s long trek takes us through one of the me most scenic parts of the journey with breathtaking views of the valley and Mount Kilimanjaro.

Day 4:

  • Meals provided: Lunch (L) – Dinner (D)
  • Walking duration: up to 3 hours
  • Walking distance: approx. 6 km (approx. 700m elevation gain to 2,800 m above sea levels)
  • Campsite: Forest Camp (Big Tree Camp)

After 3 hours of driving from the hotel, we register with the Kilimanjaro National Park authorities at the Londorossi Gate (2,100 m above sea level). This route will start in the rain forest where you might get the chance to spot some wildlife from black and white Colobus monkeys to buffalo and even elephants that have been seen in the past.

Day 5:

  • Meals provided: B-L-D
  • Waling duration: up to 8 hours
  • Walking distance: approx. 9 km (approx. 400m elevation to 4,600m before descending to 3,900m for the night)
  • Campsite: Barranco Huts

After breakfast we carry on the Machame route and trek in the high alpine zone until we reach the Lava Tower for our lunch. The Lava Tower is a 300 feet tall reminder of the mountain’s volcanic past, showing an area where lava used to shoot out of the ground and create these formations  as a result of the cooled and hardened lava.

After lunch we will continue to trek to our day’s destination – the Barranco camp. The trek to the Barranco camp is very scenic and finishes by the well-known Barranco wall.

Day 5:
  • Meals provided: B-L-D
  • Walking duration: up to 5 hours
  • Walking distance: approx. 6 km (approx. 100m elevation gain to 4,000m)
  • Campsite: Karanga Camp
Today is one of the exciting days when you have the opportunity to trek the Barranco Wall. Although this is a strenuous ‘climb’ involving some ‘scrambling’, no section of this day’s trek requires any technical skills or previous experience.
Day 6:
  • Meals provided: B-L-D
  • Walking duration: up to 5 hours
  • Walking distance: approx. 4 km (approx. 600m elevation gain to 4,600m)
  • Campsite: Barafu Huts
On day six we reach the Barafu Base camp in the afternoon to prepare for the summit trek. After dinner there will be time to rest/nap. You will start around midnight for the final ascent to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Day 7:

  • Meals provided: B–L-D
  • Walking duration: up to 6 hours to the Uhuru Peak then 6 hours descent (total of 12 hours)
  • Walking distance: approx. 5 km to the Uhuru Peak then 10 km descent (total of 15km) (approx. gain of 1,300m to the summit before descending to 3,100m)
  • Campsite: Millennium Camp

Today is the summit day.

From base camp you head to the Stella Point, on the way up you will see other trekkers  following your trail with their head torches. Once the Stella Point is reached the trail will be pretty much flat with no significant steep sections therefore it is important to note that getting to Uhuru Peak from Stella Point should not be challenging depending on how one’s body copes with the altitude.

The sunset at the Uhuru Peak is stunning with spectacular Panoramic views. The sunrise will offer you the most stunning and unique ‘surprise’. After taking pictures and enjoying the achievement there will be opportunity to take a ‘walk’ to the glacier. Following this, you will descend back to the Barafu Camp for brunch before continuing the descend to the last campsite.

Day 8:
  • Meals provided: B-L
  • Walking duration: up to 6 hours
  • Walking distance: approx. 20 km (approx. 1,000m decent to 2,100m above sea level)
Today is the last day of the amazing trek. Most of the trek will be downhill and we will enter the rainforest once again. On the way to Lemosho Gate you might see some of the beautiful Proteas flowers. Once you get to the office you will get the Certificates from the Park Officials and we will congratulate you on having ‘climbed’ the highest point in Africa. After lunch you will be taken to your hotel for shower and to inform your loved ones about your achievement.
